How can art, entrepreneurship and civil society thrive in an age of “hypernow”, short attentions spans and tl;dr ("too long; didn't read")? While society is undergoing a transformation, is it utopian for the digital society to find a common ground in tackling challenges? Our opening session addresses re:publica’s core mission of connecting the dots of a global republic.

New technologies have dramatically changed the way culture is consumed in the 21st century. While cultural artifacts have become globally available, there are now fewer reasons to physically visit museums; digital projects are providing new ways to access culture, shifting the focus from the consumer to the prosumer.

We know that stories shape the way we look at the world and other people. What’s more, they determine what actions we take. Stories have sparked crusades, revolutions and genocides. With Virtual Reality creators can impact audiences like never before. How do we use this power? What types of stories do we tell?

The digital is political. This talk will cover the most relevant political debates around digitalization and how these changes affect human rights. From copyright law to net neutrality, from artificial intelligence to state surveillance and data protection to platforms like Facebook, this session will ask: Which digital future do we want to have, and how do we get there? How are the debates different in Germany, the EU, and the US?

How do we reimagine sports and leisure for the climate crisis? How do we experience the American wilderness without gas-guzzling cars? How to we fill our lives with fun and entertainment without giant server-farms busting the planet's energy budget? Solarpunk is a sci-fi genre that depicts what a sustainable world might look like, and envisions the joys and struggles on the way to building it. Climate fiction writer Andrew Dana Hudson gives a tour of low-carbon leisure in solarpunk.

How are marginalized communities affected by digital border management systems? Both the EU and the US are undergoing severe changes in the way they handle migrants’ and travelers’ identities. Frequently the individualization of borders results in more surveillance and less mobility for refugees from the Global South and people with lower income.

The documentary THE CLEANERS, which celebrated its premiere at the Sundance Festival in February 2018 and has since been presented at the most important documentary film festivals worldwide, is a journey into a hidden shadow industry in Manila right into the heart of digital censorship - where the internet has to be "cleared" of controversial content. Who controls what we see and what we think?
╱╲
Creatives face the same balancing act: They grapple with economic pressure on the one hand, while maintaining creative and artistic freedom on the other. What's more, creativity itself is at constant battle with ever-shortening attention spans. Can online platforms foster meaningful collaboration amongst creatives? Yes, meet BOLD’s “C2C” platform.

Every day, millions of images are uploaded to social networks that we never see. Images of violence and pornography, but also those that Facebook & Co simply classify as "inappropriate". The photos and videos of low-wage earners in the Philippines are viewed and sorted out. After the Screening of THE CLEANERS the directors will share their experiences with filming in Manila and open the discussion on who controls what we see and think.

Sharing is an essential part of our behaviour. But the way we share is changing through the huge digital shifts of the last decades. Compared to human’s history this development appeared quite fast and therefore challenges our basic behaviour pattern.
